Inpatient Care:

Comforts of Home

In-patient photo

Compassionate Care Hospice staff will evaluate each patient according to the Medicare admission guidelines for inpatient care after it is determined that the patient meets the general admission criteria for hospice care. This general criteria includes the prognosis for life expectancy is six months or less and a decision has been made to provide only palliative care. Some examples of situations for which inpatient care would be recommended are:

  • When titration of medications is needed and cannot safely be done at home
  • When the patient requires close monitoring for unstable recurring medical conditions, such as hemorrhage, intractable nausea, severe respiratory distress, multiple draining skin lesions, or any distressing physical symptoms requiring skilled management
  • When death is imminent and care requires ongoing and frequent skilled nursing intervention
  • When advanced technology is needed to manage the patient's symptoms
  • When care is compromised by profound depression, restlessness or a sudden, acute breakdown in family dynamics
